One of the touring artists in this year’s Festival is Helen Simoneau. Originally from Quebec, Canada, she graduated with a BFA in 2002 from UNCSA. Helen went on to earn her MFA from Hollins University, and was a visiting assistant professor there this past spring. Over the summer, she taught at the Oklahoma Arts Institute, a summer intensive for high schoolers. In the fall of 2011, she will be teaching at the UNC School of the Arts.
Helen has received many grants and awards as a choreographer, including funding from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, The Arts Council of Winston-Salem, and the North Carolina Dance Alliance. Her choreography has been presented in Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, and has toured throughout Germany and the United States. In 2010, she was the winner of the AWARD Show in New York at Joyce Soho! She received $10,000 towards the creation of a new dance work.
The work she will present in the NC Dance Festival is Flight Distance III: Chain Suite, a duet. She will perform in the work, along with Kristin Taylor. It has been said to “call attention to the importance of the space between movements,” according to a review of her work by the Winston-Salem Journal. Catch her work in Raleigh on Sept 9, Charlotte on Sept 17, Boone on Oct 29, Greensboro on Nov 5, and in Wilmington on Feb 24!
