September 17, 2012 § 3 Comments
John Gamble is a prolific choreographer, advocate of the arts and well-loved teacher of dance. He has created over seventy works and his pieces have been performed throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. Touring with the North Carolina Dance Festival is John’s Just Another Dance, which focuses on the elements of dance design and the use of space. He was inspired to make a work that “focused on constant movement in space – the swirl of life”.
John has been presenting his work in North Carolina since 1986. His company, John Gamble Dance Theater, produces evening length dances/plays that often address political and social issues. In 1991 John and Jan Van Dyke founded the North Carolina Dance Festival with the mission to present more opportunities for North Carolina dance artists and audiences. He is also co-founder of the Greensboro Fringe Festival that produces theater and dance from around the state each year.
John was Department Chair of Dance at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA from 1975-1985 before joining the dance faculty at the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1985. While at UNCG, John served as department head and designed the Dance Theater at UNCG, the original home of the North Carolina Dance Festival. He has taught improvisation, choreography, and technology for dance and has guided senior BFA and MFA students in their capstone experience in choreography.
John was the 1991 recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council choreographic fellowship. In 2006, John was selected for a UNC Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award, the University of North Carolina’s highest teaching award. In 2007 he received the North Carolina Dance Alliance Annual Award for outstanding contributions to dance in the state. He retired from teaching in January 2012 and is now professor emeritus of dance at UNCG.
