Emily Daughtridge is an Associate Professor of Dance Studies at Appalachian State University where she teaches Modern Dance, Yoga, Choreography, and Collaborative Process. She received the Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Emily earned her M.F.A. in Dance Performance from The Ohio State University and B.F.A. in Choreography and Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. From 2002-04 she was on faculty for the Silesian Dance Theatre’s summer festival in Poland. Emily danced with both the John Gamble Dance Theater and the Jan Van Dyke Dance Group from 1996-2001.
Emily’s work, Barrier, features three dancers, and, as she tells us, “explores the navigation of barriers, both implied and physical, in the form of a wall that occupies the space. The dance presents opportunities to consider one’s perception of the structure as either obstacle or support, restrictive border or protective boundary.”
Tune in Wednesday October 2 to find out more about Emily’s visual art background, the process of choreographing with a wall, and her experience teaching at Appalachian State University!
