NCDF Bonus Day is right around the corner!
Bonus Day (Saturday, January 18th) begins with two special master classes, taught by artists from this year’s NC Dance Festival tour. First, contemporary ballet with Jen Guy Metcalf, of Terranova Dance Theatre, at 11am. Then, modern dance with Karola Luttringhaus, of Alban Elved Dance Company, at 1pm.
Jen Guy Metcalf
Jen Guy Metcalf is the founder and director of TERRANOVA Dance Theatre. Her dance work has been presented in the US and Canada. Most recently Jen’s film, “Living Room,” was selected and screened at the Oklahoma Dance Film Festival in Tulsa. She earned an MFA in Dance Choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a BFA in Dance with a concentration in Ballet from Point Park University. Jen performed professionally with Bodiography Contemporary Ballet, Playhouse Dance Company, The Kearns Dance Project, and for many independent choreographers. Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Dance at Elon University.
Jen’s high-energy Contemporary Ballet class is structured like a traditional ballet class, but incorporates contemporary movement ideas. The dancers will be challenged with aerobic sequences, improvisation, and extreme deconstruction of the classical form. Dancers will conclude the class by learning contemporary ballet choreography from TERRANOVA Dance Theatre’s repertory.

Karola Lüttringhaus was born and grew up in Berlin, Germany, where she founded ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY in 1997. She has been the artistic director of ALBAN ELVED DANCE COMPANY, as well as working as a freelance choreographer at theaters and universities across Europe and the US, including residencies at UN Las Vegas, UNC Wilmington, Salem College, and Wake Forest University. Ms Lüttringhaus received a BFA in Dance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and an MA at the Technical University, Berlin/Germany in Set Design and Scenography.
Karola’s Modern dance class utilizes set exercises as well as improvisation in order to deepen the understanding of movement principles. With proper attention to detail, phrases are dissected into their individual components, analyzing the demands, challenges, and opportunities for efficient and structurally sound use of the body’s components. This paves the way for athletic and fast work across, as well as in and out of, the floor. Tuning listening and response tools, dancers explore phrases that are organic, spiraling, undulating, multi-directional, and fluid.
