“I love differing interpretations of one piece of art.”
Kayla Mason graduated from Meredith College in 2013 with a BA in Dance Studies. While there, she was a member of the Meredith Jazz & Tap Company and Meredith Dance Theatre for 2 years. One of her pieces of choreography was selected to be shown at the All Dance Festival, while another was performed at an informal concert at the American College Dance Festival. She received awards such as Outstanding Student Choreographer, Outstanding Student Performer, and the Meredith Dance Theatre Dedication award.
At the moment, Kayla says she is teaching at two studios (Destiny Dance Institute and Arts Together), “performing in Eleanor Smith’s choroegraphy for the NC Dance Festival Tour, and rehearsing with Carol Finley for her upcoming concert. I am very thankful for all of the dance opportunities there are in North Carolina, and I have been so blessed to be a part of the NC dance scene already! I can’t wait to further find my place in the NC dance world.”
Kayla will be presenting her work Soul Survivors in the Audience Choice Show. “The piece was inspired by the shoe exhibit at the Holocaust Museum and my interest in that event’s history. It portrays five victims of the Holocaust going through the same event in different ways. They all know the end result, but they all process it differently. The only common thing they leave behind is their shoes.”
Soul Survivors will be presented in the Audience Choice Show at 3:00pm, during the NCDF Bonus Day in Greensboro. Along with 2 other emerging choreographers, Kayla will present her work and answer questions from the audience. The Audience Favorite will go on to perform in Greensboro on the NC Dance Festival performance in November.
